MURCHISON

GOLF CLUB ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING Mr D. R. Conway presided over a good attendance of members at the annual general meeting of the Murchison Golf Club which was held in the Oddfellows’ Hall on last Friday night. The balance sheet showing a very satisfactory credit balance was adopted. The secretary read the following report which was adopted: “Your committee has pleasure in presenting for your consideration their annual report covering the operations of your club over the 1939 playing season.

The past season has proved a very satisfactory one from all points of view the weather was mainly favourable and the enthusiasm displayed by the various cimmittees was most commendable.

Membership: Membership has been well maintained, standing at 61 financial members; it is hoped that this figure will be increased during the coming season.

Course: The course was in fair order throughout the year, although the work carried out over the off season and in the early months of the year caused certain restrictions upon play. However the benefit of the programme of improvements carried out will be felt in this and in future years.

Inter-Club Matches: Owing to petrol restrictions and general unsuitability of dates, no inter-club matches were played. It is hoped that these will be arranged again this year.

Tournament: The second Nelson Country Golf Clubs’ Annual Tournament was played off on your links over the King's Birthday week-end, the local team tying with the Takaka Club in the teams’ championship. Local players were well to the fore throughout the play and they are to bo congratulated upon their very fine performances. The venue of this year’s tournament is Takaka.

Club Championships: Considerable interest was displayed in all matches and after Some very good games results were as follows: —Stewart Cup, J. B. Milligan; Dewars Cup, H. H. Milligan; Borkin Cup, L. Hutchinson; Sykes Cup, N. B. Batchelor; Mammoth Cup, Mrs R. I. McGregor; Logan Cup, Mrs J. A. West; Ladies’ Handicap Cup, Miss O. J. Wallace; Mockett Cup, Miss K. Swanney.

During the season Mr C. Mockett presented the club with a cup for open competition on handicap conditions; Miss Swanney is to be congratulated upon being the first winner of this trophy.

Finance; The accounts show a small credit balance in the year’s workings, which is very satisfactory considering that the loans advanced by members have been repaid in full. The various social activities conducted by the club assist the finances in no small degree.

Thanks: The committee wishes to record its thanks to all who assisted in any way with the functioning of the club; the club should be grateful to these helpers who come forward so readily. The club should consider itself fortunate in numbering on its roll such keen and willing members.”
