STUDENTS SERVING WITH FORCES

PROGRESS STATEMENT OF PASSES [United Press Association) WELLINGTON, This Day. Some examination figures regarding stu4§nts now serving with the military, forces were given at a meeting. o| ; \4he\Senate of the University of New Zealand in Wellington yesterday. . v .The vice-chancellor, Professor Sir Thomas Hunter, said that 400 cases had been, considered by the committee concerned, Professor von Zedlitz, Dr. Evans and himself. Of the candidates who sat from campq 41 passed and thus required no concession; 32 additional passed a section of a degree and in these cases there was a certain amount of concession. There were 35 credited with a single subject, 39 awaited further reports or marks and there were 50 cases of definite failure for whom nothing could be done. There were 190 refunds of fees made to students who preferred this. In addition there were those passed on the recommendation of the Professorial Board. Dr. Newlands (Dunedin) said he considered that the utmost generosity should be shown to those students serving in the forces. Many had joined up immediately, the call came and had been made promises by unauthorised persons that they would be given study facilities in camp. However, with the short period available for training this could not be done. There were some who failed who would, had there not been a break in their study, possibly have got at least the 50 per cent marks necessary for a pass. Sir Thomas Hunter said that the committee was more than anxious to be as liberal as it could be within the powers conferred by the amendment. There were still many more cases to be considered and the figures he had given were by no means final.
