CITY ASSOCIATION EXECUTIVE MEETING LATE STARTING OF MATCHES A meeting of the City Cricket Association Executive was held last evening the following members being present: Messrs E. R. Neale (Old Boys), G. Syme (Wakatu), H. M. McGirr, F. L. Hill (Athletic), A. S. Thomas (Hospital), N. Batchelor (Maitai), F. Hobern (Tahuna), W. Terrill (Stoke), W. N. Blincoe (Y.M.C.A.), C. Exton (Umpires) and A. J. Gray (secretary). Apologies were received from Messrs F. Mitchell (president), R. H. Methven I (College) and D. Max (Waimea). . j The following classifications were ; passed: C. Wright (Athletic junior), I Newenham, Clark (Wakatu junior). I The secretary reported on the rep- ( resentative fixtures during the holidays, i The results were: Senior representai tives defeated Wellington touring team, junior representatives defeated Marlborough, Junior B representatives lost to Motueka. The junior representatives were congratulated on their success, and the secretary was instructed to write to the Marlborough Cricket. Association expressing thanks for its hospitality to the Nelson team. Some very pointed comment was made on the late start in the two ' matches on Boxing Day. The Junior | B match against Motueka started half an hour later and in the Colts v. Junior t representatives match the start was ( threequarters of an hour late. The lateness of the local players’ arrival on | the ground was made more noticeable by the punctual arrival of the Motueka r team. It was suggested that the showery weather led many of the Nelson players to think that the matches had been postponed. It was pointed out, however, that in case of bad weather, unless matches have been officially postponed, it is the duty of players to , turn up at the ground punctually in r order to ascertain the official arrangements. Players are not justified in thinking games are cancelled because | it has rained as play is often possible later in the day. The same principle \ holds good in club matches as well as in representatives matches. 5 It was also mentioned that several ’ players had failed to give notice of their inability to play in representative i teams. Players are requested to give * strict attention to this point, other--1 wise considerable inconvenience is caused. 1 The rule about stopping play w-as r also discussed. The association rule is that play must not be continued after f the hour fixed for stopping (6.30 p.m.). s even although the match has started 5 late. This rule, however, is subject to qualification by an M.C.C. rule, which 6ays that if an over is in progress at , the time fixed for stopping it must be completed, unless .a wicket falls. Two ’ minor points should also be considered. J If a wicket falls between 6.28 and 6.30 the next batsman has the option of r going to the crease. If an innings closes ‘ between 6.20 and 6.30, the match is * finished, as the ten-minute interval between innings is obligatory. 5 Three players, Mellor, Taylor (Vici tory) and Gates (Hospital), who had been graded Junior A provisionally, were confirmed in that grade.
