BOROUGH COUNCIL FORTNIGHTLY MEETING • i The fortnightly meeting of the Richmond Borough Council was held last 1 evening* There were present: The j Mayor (Mr A. R. Tuffnell), Councillors | W. L. Palmer, E. Lukey. M. H. McGlashen. W. E. Poole, E. Norris, and H. Stratford. Before commencing the business the I Mayor referred to the death of Dr. Cur- ; rie, by whose passing the borough had | lost not only a highly qualified practi- | lioner but a gentleman and friend. ' He moved that a letter of sympathy be sent to Mrs Currie and the family j conveying appreciation of the valuable j services rendered to the community by the late Dr. Currie. I The motion was carried, members j i standing as a mauk of respect. Accounts totalling £142 7s 7d were j | passed for payment. FOREMAN’S REPORT j The foreman’s report was read and I adopted as follows: l The cleaning out of the reservoir, af--1! ter the damage caused by the flood, was completed on 15th December. A total 1 of 344 loads of gravel and mud was , carted out with the two teams engaged t and the assistance of Scheme 13 labour, i The old rose-box, recovered and gal- ) i vanised, was used to replace the new j.'one which has been in use since August. I 1934, and will require to be recovered j before being used again. A collection j! of household rubbish was made on 13th I December. The grader was worked on J the following streets and roads up to ’ the 22nd December.—State highway, J Bateup's road. Champion road, William J street, Edward and George streets, Upflper Queen street. Hill street. Wensley | road, McShane’s road. Lower Queen street, Beach road, Oxford and Cambridge streets. NEW FOREMAN’S REPORT Work was resumed on 4th January after the Christmas holidays. Lower Queen street, Wensley road. Upper Queen street, George street, William street, Hill street, and Champion road have been graded. The truck has been used carting away the metal left by the recent flood on Hart’s road. This was deposited on Hill street south to fill up the wheel ruts. There is a good deal 1 more gravel to be shifted, also the 3 : foot culvert by Malcolm’s requires to ‘ be cleaned out. The Cambridge street * footpath and watertable has been weed- ’ ed and the lawns cut round the hill. On ‘ 6th January the water at the reservoir was just trickling down the overflow. The Mayor took the opportunity of ; welcoming to the meeting the council’s : new foreman. Mr R. McEwan, who I commenced duties on 4th January. CORRESPONDENCE ) } The Mayor of Nelson, Mr G. L. Page, ' writing from the hospital, thanked the ■ council for its message of sympathy. * Mrs Currie wrote thanking the Mayor ’ and council for their courtesy in clost! ing the shops on the afternoon of the ' | late Dr. Currie’s funeral. ' j The Health Inspector forwarded his ) j monthly report. There were no cases ’ j of notifiable infectious disease. ’ j The report was received. REGISTRATION OF DOGS t; The Mayor moved and Councillor j McGlashen seconded: That the fees for > j the registration of dogs in the Borough ' I of Richmond for the year 1940 be fixed 5 as follows: Dogs kept solely for the purpose of herding or droving sheep or ■ cattle by bona fide shepherds, drovers 7 or farmers, 2s 6d each; for all other . doys, 10s each. That in addition to ■ the above fees a charge of Is per dog I I be made for a supply of hydatid medij cine provided that in the case of dogs : registered for the first time after the * month of July such last mentioned ■' charge shall be 6d per dog. The motion was carried, t - APPOINTMENT OF DOG-TAX COLLECTOR It was resolved that subject to his approval Mr H. Hawkins be appointed i dog-tax collector. I PENALTY ON RATES It was resolved on the Mayor’s ; motion that 10 per cent, penalty be im- > posed on rates not paid on or before ’ the 20th March, 1940. Mr H. McDonald applied for a build- ; ing permit for a residence in Oxford street. —Granted. Mr E. B. Jones having declined the i position of extra hand and truck-driver, !it was resolved that the temporary position of truck-driver and extra hand ‘ be advertised. , Regarding seepage of water in York 1 Place it was resolved that the legal position be investigated. It was resolved that the lease of the J Cemetery Reserve be offered to Mr H. i Schroder, the present lessee. On Councillor Stratford’s motion it j was resolved that Jubilee Park be graz- ■ ed with sheep, and that the young trees I be supported by means of stakes. Councillor Stratford drew attention to the dangerous condition of the corner at the junction of Dorset street and Wensley road. The owner of the property is to be asked to cut the hedge at this point. The question of improving the water supply of Mr Long in Hill street was left in the hands of the works committee with power to act.
