NARROW ESCAPE FROM GAOL THE HERETAUNGA SMASH [United Press Association] WELLINGTON, This Day. Colin Spencer Young, a naval rating, arrested following the collision at Heretaunga yesterday, was charged in he Upper Hutt Court today with being intoxicated in charge of a car and with having no driver’s license. On the first charge he was fined ’£2s or a month’s imprisonment and prohibited from obtaining a license till 1941. On the other charge he was fined £5 10s and costs. The captain of the ship on which! accused was employed put in a plea! that accused should not be imprison- j ed as his services were indispensable. Mr Gouding, S.M., said that if the' plea had not been made he would! have sent Young to gaol. Eight persons were injured in the! collision, not seven as previously re- I ported, an addition to the list being! Richard Gard (24), who was also in! Young’s car. His injuries are slight. GAOL FOR AIDING AND ABETTING INTOXICATION IN CHARGE DUNEDIN, This Day. Alexander Archibald Campbell was sentenced to ten days’ imprisonment for aiding and abetting George Jones in the commission of the offence of intoxication in charge of a motor truck. The charge arose out of a case in which Jones received a similar sentence. Campbell was the senior officer to Jones in the Public Works Department, and Jones was driving under his di- i rection from Beaumont to Dunedin. j
