TAPAWERA

SCHOOL CONCERT AN ENJOYABLE FUNCTION What was acclaimed by popular vote as the most enjoyable concert held in the Tapawera Druids’ Hall for very many years was successfully staged be> fore a packed and appreciative audience by the Tapawera School children under the guidance of their teachers, Mrs Sutherland and Mr Allison, and accompanied by Mrs (Phyllis) McKane at the piano. Although the programme was long, enthusiasm and interest were maintained till the very end and well merited applause was unstintingly showered on the juvenile actors. There was a noticeable absence of individual items, thus giving all children an opportunity to play many parts. Choruses, folk-dancing, one-act plays, operettas, dramatisation of poems and choral speaking filled the programme.

Owing to the length of the programme encores were not permitted, with two exceptions, viz.: ‘Bo-Peep.” junior play, and “The King's Breakfast,” senior Play.

Mr Batt, the chairman, spoke laudably of the teachers’ efforts and the high standard of talent revealed in the children, finding but one fault in the programme—the absence of “The Fourth Form of St. Percy’s.” On behalf of the staff and pupils Mr Allison thanked patrons, parents and committee for their indispensable support and co-operation and made an appeal for greater social co-operation within the district to promote interest along such lines as would yield an opportunity to these juveniles to further exploit their individual talents.

Special thames is due to Mrs Savage for the loan of many costumes, to Mrs Allison for the cutting out of costumes, and again to both these ladies for their stage embellishments, which lent an artistic atmosphere to the whole performance.

Mrs Sutherland and Mrs McKane were the recipients of two beautiful bouquets; and after a very sumptuous supper, dancing was continued.
