KAIKOURA WITHOUT POWER RIVERS RUNNING BANK HIGH [United Press Association] CHRISTCHURCH, 27th August. The heavy rain of the last few days ’ has caused a rapid rise in North Can terbury rivers and. at Kaikoura, the 15 worst flood since 1923 occurred to-day. ■ On Saturday, the Ashley river at the ’ Rangiora-Loburn traffic bridge was running almost bank high and proper--1 ties in some localities adjoining the Eyre river had large areas under water. At the week-end the Eyre was running through the diversion into the.Wai- * makariri for the first time this year, 1 and all fords were impassable. Lyell creek, which enters the sea near the Kaikoura County Council’s offices, rose ’ rapidly overnight and on Saturday and this morning flat areas in the township were covered by from a foot to 18 inches of water which flooded about a dozen offices and shops on the beach road. Kaikoura to-day was without electric power.
