j Importance of Surgery i The important part of surgery in 1 modern medical science was revealed jin the annual report of the medical | superintendent. Dr. J. W. Craven, presented at a meeting of the Auckland Hospital Board on Monday. Dr. Craven stated that 12,330 major and minor operations had been performed during the year, as compared with 11.473 in the previous year. A total of 9922 local and general anaesthetics had been administered. An Unselfish Profession | A tribute to the work of the medical profession, which he had described |as one of the noblest in the world. | was paid by Archbishop Averill in St. j Mary's Cathedral, Auckland on Sun- | day. when he was speaking of the life ; and work of the late Colonel R. Tracy j Inglis, states the "New Zealand Herald.” "Maybe,” he said, "the true estimate of the unselfish service they render to suffering humanity can only bi* gauged by God Himself, but those of us who know something of the amount of altruistic service rendered to the poorer section of the community by the members of the medical profession do indeed thank God for those sons and daughters of consolation and encouragement.” Pupils ond Pictures An inquiry as to who decided whtj ther a picture was suitable for pupils of the College to attend was made at this week's meeting of the Marlborough ; College Board of Governors by Mr H. Duckworth (reports the "Express"). He had heard that on two occasions within ten days the whole college had attended a picture show, and he wondered whether they had been suitable from the educative point of vivw. In reply, the Principal (Mr J. Stewart) said that he made the decision, but only after he had consulted members of th.% teaching staff and made other inquiries. The two pictures the school had attended, were, lie considered, of an educational value, and should have been of considerable benefit to the pupils. The whole school did not attend picture shows very often, although pupils were allowed time off if they brought a note from parents.
