LIME COMMISSION INQUIRY

INVESTIGATIONS IN NELSON An inquiry into lime production iti the Nelson district has been made by a Lime Investigation Committee, consisting of Messrs G. A. Holmes (chairman) of Wellington, John Baron (Invercargill), W. Horrobin (Wellington), and the secretary, L. Vogtheer. The committee, which was set up by the Minister of Agriculture to inquire into the possibilities of improvement in production and methods of marketing and distribution of lime throughout New Zealand, met the Nelson representatives of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union and producers representatives in committee yesterday afternoon. The Commission visited all the lime workings in the district between Nelson and Riwaka in the course of their investigations. Representatiions were received from various branches of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union and from the lime companies operating the area concerned. The members of the Farmers’ Union to meet the Commission were: Messrs R. C. T. Raine, N- A. Win, F. Teece. A. N. Wilkinson, D. I. Llewellin, D. L. Drummond and R. W. S. Stevens. The committee visited the Cawthron Institute and was struck by the soil research work being undertaken in Nelson and on the West Coast. The party departed yesterday afternoon to visit the Ka Ka Lime Works, and proceeded to Murchison where another sitting was held.
