BOROUGH AFFAIRS INCREASE IN RATES At the fortnightly meeting of the Mo* tucka Borough Council, held last even- ' ing. there were present: The Mayor (Mr , R. J. L. York), and Councillors S. E. Hulbert. S. B. Canavan. H. Whitwell. T. , £. Stevens, T. Hickmott. and W. Egin- j ton LATE MRS M. SIMPSON I The Mayor in making reference to the j passing of the late Mrs M. Simpson said 1 that for a period she had been Mayoress , ol Motueka, and had played her part j nobly in the social activities of the ; town. Mrs Simpson was one of the very old residents of the district where she had spent most of her life. Mrs Simp- i son had been well conversant with the : early history of Motueka, and was a j good The Mayor moved that a letter of svmpathy be forwarded to the relatives. The motion was carried in the usual manner. CORRESPONDENCE The secretary. Nelson Provincial Progress League, forwarded copy of report by Messrs J. A. Harley and F. G. Gibbs on a recent visit to the Exhibition Buildings in connection with the Nel-son-Buller Court, which would give the council an insight into the progress I made and the lines upon which the 1 League was working, j The council was asked for the first portion of its promised contribution as

early as possible. It was pointed out ! that, as the liquidation of the Exhibi-, tio:i Company was expected to be com- j | pleted in 1941, contributing local bodies j should complete their payments during ! 1940. It was resolved. Messrs Hulbert and i Whitwell. that the Motueka Borough j Council pay to the Nelson Progress I League the sum of £3O. being the first of two instalments due. The Commissioner of Transport, in i reply to the council’s letter, regretted ! that, as a vehicle carrying a pump or j fire pump was not specifically included in the list of exemptions from license ! fees, contained in the Order-in-Council j described, there was no power to grant such exemption. The writer stated that ' when next the regulations were amend-j ed. consideration would be given to including fire fighting apparatus in the list of exemptions. The convener, social committee. A. and P. Association, wrote complaining of the state of the Institute Hall on sth June, when it was necessary to clean the entire building before their dance could be held. In view of the inconvenience caused, the writer asked that the committee be compensated by way of a reduction in the rental. It was decided. Councillors Whitwell and Hulbert. that the writer be inform- ' ed that the Institute Hall was cleaned outp rior to its use by the A. and P. Association, and that as the attention of the council (which had po knowledge of the state in which it was alleged to have bene found) had not |?oen drawn to the matter at the time, it was unable to consider a reduction in the usual

charge. FOREMAN S REPORT ' The foreman. Mr W. G. Anderson, reported that the sealing of the High street south footpath (State highway) was nearly completed, and required only one day to finish it. The grader had worked the Motueka-Kohatu highway, also graded up the shoulders of the State highway. The following streets j had also been graded:—Old Wharf road, . Queen Victoria, Pah, Atkin. Thorp. ! Greenwood and Tudor streets. Patching j had been carried out in Tudor, Vosper, ! Atkins, Poole, Queen Victoria streets, j and Old Wharf road. The crusher had I crushed metal for footpath sealing, also | concrete and bricks carted from the i Post Office wall. This material was used for filling of potholes. j FIRE BRIGADE AGREEMENT RATIFIED j As the result of a conference between ; the two bodies, the agreement (previously published) between the Motueka j Borough Council and the Motueka Volunteer Fire Brigade was ratified, with ] one minor amendment. INCREASE IN RATES I The estimated receipts and expenditure for the next twelve months were considered in committee, and with slight amendments were approved by i the council. j On resuming in open meeting the ! Mayor gave notice to move at the next j meeting of the council that rates for the | ensuing year be levied as follows: General rate ljd in the £ (last year 1 11-16 d), special rate 15-16 d in the £ (last year 13-16); hospital rate id in the £ (last year 7-16 d). All on the capital value of property in the borough, and a sanitation fee of £1 10s per pan per year.
