MOTUEKA

WOMEN’S DIVISION SOCIAL MEETING The June social meeting of the Motueka Women’s Division, postponed from Wednesday on account of wet weather, was held on Saturday afternoon, when Mrs L. Inwood presided over a good attendance of members. A cordial welcome was extended to a . , new member, and also to a former member who has re-joined the branch . after an absence of some years from the 1 district. An invitation was received from the Tasman-Mariri branch to the birthday party on 21st June. In respect to Miss Johnston’s tour Mrs | Inwood informed members that classes . | would commence towards the end of July, and that Tuesday afternoon had been fixed for Motueka. Mrs H. Stringer had kindly offered the use of her kitchen for the nutrition class. The president also stated that Mrs ' Wratt, secretary of the Musical Com- f; petitions, wished it made known toI members that Miss Paterson would j come to Motueka to teach elocution. It was decided, on the motion of Mesdames Taylor and V. Wilson, that the birthday party of the Motueka branch be held this year in the afternoon, instead of in the evening, as in the past. . Several members received birthday shoulder sprays, and Mrs Inwood i president), and Mrs Taylor (vice-presi-dent), were also the recipients of shoulder sprays at the hands of Mrs D. W. Talbot (Gardening Circle Leader) on the occasion of the silver wedding of both ladies, who were accorded congratulations and musical honours. Particularly interesting and very much enjoyed by all was the travel talk, given by Miss Jordan, who took as her subject “A Tour Through Canada,” identical with that of the present Royal tour. From Southampton and Cherbourg across the Atlantic by the Empress of Australia to Montreal and thence to Winnipeg and the Great Lakes. Miss Jordan carried her hearers with her, with graphic descriptions of the wonderful scenery, and places of interest visited. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded , Miss Jordan, and the hope expressed that she would give a further talk on , her travels at an early date. Miss Jordan was also the recipient of v shoulder spray. The competitions for the month % ?sul- 1

ted as follows: (a) Six sausage rolls: Mrs Weir 1, Mrs V. Arthur 2, Mrs Woodward 3; (b) gingham apron: Mrs Stringer 1 and 2. Mrs Dalton 3. Gardening Circle, 3 chrysanthemums: Mrs Dalton 1, Mrs G. E. Smith 2, Mrs Inwood 3. Following the dispensing of afternoon tea, items were contributed by Miss Barbara Smith and Mrs J. Boyce, who entertained with recitation and songs respectively. An amusing competition and a “mystery parcel,” which was w’on by Mrs E. D. Wilson, concluded the programme. Mrs Inwood reminded members of the Women’s Division euchre parties being held at the residencet of Mrs Stringer on Saturdays, and also announced the competition for next month: (a) nut loaf, (b) knitted bed socks, (c) jar of autumn leaves; and the hostesses. Mesdames H. Cate, L. Inwood, Canavan and Thompson. The president extended thanks to Mr Haase for judging the cookery and to Mrs J. O. Anderson, who judged the sewing and flowers. CARD EVENING The weekly euchre party, held at the residence of Mrs H. Stringer on Saturday, with a good attendance, proved very enjoyable. Prizes went to Messrs

I H Bisley and C. Knapp and consolation, j trophies to Mr E. Bisley and Mrs T. Stevens. At the previous card evening winners of trophies were Mr Robertson, Mrs S. Thompson, Mr H. Stringer and Mrs Camp. MOUTERE W.D.F.U. The monthly meeting of the Moutere branch of the W.D.F.U., whi-h was held at the residence of Mrs John Teece at Harakeke. was well attended. After the reading of the Creed the Division Song was sung by those present. Apologies for absence were received, also a resignation from a member who has left the district. After general business had been dealt with, further arrangements were made in connection with Miss Johnston’s classes. A report on the Nelson Provincial Executive was given by delegates. An interesting letter was received from the secretary of the Pan-Pacific Women's Association. An amusing competition supplied by Miss Cooper was enjoyed by all. Results of the monthly competitions were: —Best apron, Mrs Coleman first, Mrs M. Teece second, Mrs Franklin third; junior, Miss C. Teece first, Miss R. Brown second, Miss M. Brown third, i Most points in previous year's competitions, Mrs Cloustin; junior section, j Miss M. Goodall. Supper was served, members of the Farmers' Union being present. Mrs Teece was thanked for the use of her rooms and the meeting closed.
