CITY ENGINEER

The City Engineer (Mr J. G. Littlejohn) reported for the fortnight ending 11th May as follows:

Streets and Footways.—-Maintenance top-dressing has been done on Halifax street and Wakefield Quay. A coat of tar has been put on the footpath and roadway of North road where it was

privately cleared of weeds and grass. It is proposed to continue top-dressing work so long as the weather keeps fine. Drainage.—The repair of the Hampden street sewer has been completed from Waimea road to the stormwater culvert at the intersection with Ngati-

awa street. The continuation of this work is temporarily suspended and the availablye men transferred to Weka street. Pitt Street. —Two applications for the erection of dwellings in Pitt street have been granted and the question of water supply and drainage is now urgent. The report was adopted. RESERVI;S SUPERINTFNDENT The report of the Superintendent of Reserves (Mr A White) for the fortnight ending 11th May. was as follows: The Wigzell Gardens are receiving attention; undergrowth, hedges and unsuitable trees are being removed in preparation for a new lay-out. This is an ideal reserve and specially suited for such subjects as rhododendrons, azaleas, roses, and a number of our newly imported trees and shrubs. A path will connect up with Alfred street and Hampden street, with lawns and flower beds on either side. A new boundary fence should replace the one on the east side, should the property owners be agreeable. The Tipahi street boundary could be extended if this road should be too steep for vehicular traffic. Spring bedding is now being carried out on all the reserves. The report was adopted.

ELECTRICAL ENG IN EE R The Electrical Engineer (Mr E. Fleming' reported for the fortnight ending 11th May. as follows.— City applieations 3445 (increase 4). city extensions 7742 (increase 12*: total 11.187 (increase 16). Lighting load applied for 2142 k.w. (increase 3 k.w.), heating load applied for 6488 k.w. (increase 10 k.w.), power load applied for 2610 k.w. (increase 1 k.w.); total 11.240 k.w. (increase 14 k.w.). Peak load : Day 700 k.w.. night 930 k.w. The plant at the Power Station is operating satisfactorily and only minor adjustments have been found necesOwing to pieces of broken rock from the quarry striking and breaking tha power mains, the electric supply to Brook street was cut off for 2$ hours on the 2nd May. The report was adopted.
