FORTNIGHTLY MEETING LAST NIGHT CORRESPONDENCE AND REPORTS j The fortnightly meeting of the Nel- ! son City Council held last evening was attended by the Mayor (Mr G. L. Paget. Councillors E. R. The Gas Companies’ Association of New Zealand requested the Council to make a grant towards the gas exhibit at the Centennial Exhibition. A sum of £ls was granted. Messrs S. Kirkpatrick and Co. Ltd. made application for a revision of electric light charges, as a large consumer. The matter was referred to the Electreity Committee. Mr Ivan J. Maekersey asked that Wainui House be considered as one consumer in assessing electric light charges. The request was granted. The Oppenheimer Casing Co. Ltd. asked for permission to draw water from the pipes supplying the City Abattoir. The application was refused. The Nelson Fire Board requested the Council to frame a bylaw to meet the position with regard to the accumulation of inflammable materials in city premises. The matter was referred to the Bylaws Committee.

The Public Works Department advised that Church street was not a public street and that exemption under section of the Public Works Act 1928 could not therefore he made. It was decided to recognise Church street as a public street. Pastor E. D. Wilson (the Commonwealth Covenant Church) applied for permission to hold an open-air meeting at the corner of Bridge Trafalgar

streets on Sunday. 14th May. The request was granted, provided the Salvation Army’s meeting was not interfered with.

The Nelson Croquet Club wrote with reference to the use of certain of the club's tools by the Council during the formation of the new lawns, and suggesting that the Council take the tools over at the valuation of £lO 10s. It was decided not to accede to the request and to return the barrow and

Mrs A. I. Westley applied for permission to pipe the ditch in front of her property in Vanguard street. The matter was referred to the Works Committee.

Mrs M. M. Scott requested the Council to pipe the ditch in front of her residence in. Emano street and offering to supply the necessary pipes. The Works Commtitee is to inspect.

; Messrs G. M. Rout and Sons advised : concerning thp old Customhouse site j (Messrs Cock and CoU and the taking over of certain strips of land and forwarding a copy of a letter from the Public Works Department. The Council decided to defer the matter pending preparation of a plan by the City Engineer.

Mr Jas. Jdeslop and Lieut.-Colonel H. C. H. Burton asked that a street light be placed opposite the right-of-way to their respective house sin Bronte street. The Works Committee is to inspect. Messrs H. A. and A. L. Johnston asked that an approach be made to their property across the footpath in Halifax street, and asking that attention be given to the footpath sump. The Works Committee is to inspect. Plans prepared by Mr C. M. Hoult were approved for the subdivision of section 869 and part sections 868 and 871, on behalf of Mr B. B. Jones, and for part section 269 A on behalf of J. Scott and Mrs L. Gunderson..
