MAORI SYNOD
THREE BISHOPS TO ATTEND AUCKLAND. 11th April. Three bishops of the Church of England. including Archbishop Averill. will attend the Maori synod, which will open in Whangara, 16 miles north of Gisborne. on Wednesday. The proceedings will be of exceptional interest to Maori and European residents alike, and arrangements are being made by the Whangara people to entertain a large number of lay visitors, as well as almost a. full muster of the Maori clergy. The Bishop of Waiapu, the Rt. Rev. G. V. Gerard, will be in attendance at the synod in company with the Bishop of Aotearoa, the Rt. Rev. F. A. Bennett. Archbishop Averill will be accompanied from Auckland by Archdeacon Hawkins. On Wednesday evening several choirs will compete for a number of trophies which have done much in recent years to encourage the study of choral music among the Maori people. The opening of the new carved meet- , ing house in Whangara will take plaee ' next Thursday, and this will attract ] much interest among the Europeans, as ] 1 well as among the Maoris.
