ANTARCTIC EXPEDITION
ELLSWORTH TO SPEND WINTER AT SOUTH POLE TO CONDUCT SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH iI'.P.A.-By Electric Telegraph—Copvnrbtl SYDNEY, 28th February. The explorer, Lincoln Ellsworth, today announced a new expedition to the Antarctic in 1941, when he will camp lor the entire winter at the South Pole with two companions. “I will pursue observations of importance in several branches of scientific research,” he said. He is uncertain whether he will leave for the South Pole from Australia or from New Zealand. He will probably use two planes and dig them in at the Pole after a flight from the Bay of Whales, a distance of 700 miles. He pointed out that his leading subjects of research there would be meteorological conditions and the ionization of atmosphere layers Mr Ellsworth added: “I also propose to name hs American Highland' the 81.000 square-mile highly-elevated land south of Princess Elizabeth Land, over which 1 (lew and claimed for the United States of America this year."
