A solitary lightning flash during a thunderstorm struck a winch, ran up a steel cable, and brought down in flames one of six balloons of the Stanmore barrage The balloon fell on top of a hangar, damaging it. but nobody was injured.' Another balloon was similarly destroyed between Chigwell and Buckhurstshill. Lightning ignited a building being j constructed at Hendon. It was a freak storm, being followed by ten minutes’ darkness and causing temporary floods.
