LONG-DISTANCE FLYING
FURTHER STRtDfe FORWARD BY R.A.F. I British Official Wireless! RUGBY, 25th February. The Air Minister, Sir Kingsley Wood, in a speech to-day described the flight of the Vickers Wellesley bombers to Australia last year as a further stride forward in the plans of the Royal Air Force to develop long-range flying in the interests of British defence. The performance was one of the most notable of British enterprises, capturing the world’s long-distance record. Those great qualities of courage and daring were still with the force and with the new recruits who were of a high quality and who were joining in large numbers. An able authority on air strategy, said the Minister, had recently observed that up to now the greatest impediment to getting full value from Britain’s strategic air routes had been the gap between this country and Egypt. It had now been demonstrated how small was this impediment, and it was decreasing rapidly.
