110 UN SELL'S WIN INTER-HOUSE ' COMPETITION At Trafalgar Park the main attraction of the evening, the business girls’i inter-house competition was carried I through without a hitch and the wide j interest it attracted has ensured it becoming a popular annual event. The winner of the inter-house competition was Hounsell’s team with 2511 points, Woolworth’s being second, half a point behind and Hurst’s third with 248 J points. The complete results were as folows:—
PROCESSION THROUGH STREETS The procession from the Church Steps to Trafalgar Park moved oft in
three sections, first the primary scnoo children lead by the Pipe Band, thei the Nelson Citizens' Band, followed b: Cubs, Scouts, Girl Guides, Sea Scout and secondary school pupils, and th< third group was the girl's inter-housi teams and gymnasts lead by the Gar Irison Band. I A large crowd had assembled alon; | Trafalgar street and as the inter-hous' I teams approached, the applause be came enthusiastic. Apart from ttv house teams the long procession, whicl at one stage reached almost from th Church Steps to the Park gates, wa very successful, the marching of th secondary school pupils attacting spec ial attention. AT THE PARK On arrival at the Park the first dis | play was given by primary sclioc children who fell in in front of th stand to form in large letters the wor “Health.” The primary school girl then performed a colourful folk danci Massed drill by the inter-house team followed. This display was one of th high-lights of the evening and wa obviously the result of a great deal c hard practice. If these exercises ar carried on by the girls now that th

Heart College were enjoyable items S 1 I v hich were well received by the pub- ' " lie. j * Outside the inter-hows events, how- I n ever, the best received its-m of the j 1 evening was the display of physical * drill by boys from Nels'i.i College, j b Their marching created a very favour-: 0 I able impression while their drill, which j a | consisted of their every day physical j " training routine, was of very high j ‘ standard, especially for so early in the j school year. QUICKSTEP COMPETITION < ! The inter-house quickstep marching j ! competition was the same as that per- " j formed at the Dominion Band Con- r j tests. The teams commenced from the t ! northern end of the ground and j 1 j marched for 50 yards in front of the 1 stand. By taking regular 30 inch paces 1 they were expected to cover the dis- ; Y tance in 00 paces, any variation losing I |. points for the team. J. Eyre, N.Z.S.C., Lieutenant e H. Scoltock and Sergeant-Majors H. h Frank and W. P. Morgan, N.Z.P.S. The c marching of all the teams was excel - lent, the winners being Wool worth’s e with 133 points. Buxton's second with 129 and McKenzie’s third with 128 points. In the other inter-house competitions, four ball games and the drill demonstration, the winners were Hurst’s from Hounsell’s and McKay’s. >1 V/hilc these events were being care ried out gymnasts, members of the d team from the now defunct Y.M.C.A. New Zealand Championships, performis cd on the horizontal and parallel bars e at the left of the stand. ,f THE MAYOR’S REMARKS e During an interval between items the Mayor, Mr G. L. Page, took the opportunity of thanking all those who had taken part in the display. The public bad been promised a spectacular demonstration, be said, but be had not expected anything so sparkling as be had seen that night. He specially thanked Sergeant-Major Williams who i had worked very hard training the ! girls, also the school teachers, the Nelson Colleges and the Sacred Heart Girls’ College, and Mr L. C. Cato who had been in eharge of the display. The Mayor concluded his remarks with an appeal to all those who had not taken part in the demonstrations, to become members of some sports organisation and carry out the Government’s object in holding Fitness Week. The results of the tug-of-war were
as follows; Heats, Kia Ora beat Baird’s. Police beat Kirkpatrick’s, Fire Brigade beat Montgomery’s. Semi-finals: Fire Brigade beat Kia Ora, Police beat Newman’s. Final: Fire Brigade beat Police.
