SATURDAY’S PLAY

SIXTEEN RINKS STILL UNBEATEN STANDARD CONTINUES TO IMPROVE I United Preßß ABsociationl AUCKLAND, 15th January. With the first week of the New Zealand bowling championship tournament over, officials have every reason to be pleased with the progress made, the competitions all having run to schedule, in spite of the fact that the weather has been threatening on several occasions. Light showers fell yesterday, but there was not sufficient rain to hamper the competitors to any great extent, though the greens were more holding and provided a distinct change from conditions which had prevailed earlier. As the tournament progresses, the standard, which has been excellent continues to rise.

At the completion of four rounds in the rinks event, the following 16 players remain undefeated: Myers (Avondale), Rolls (Featherston), Piper (Maitai), Thomas (Mount Albert), Watts (Victoria), De Launay (Carlton), Walker (Mount Eden), Ure Auckland), Franks (Balmoral), Ritchie (Carlton), Higginbotham (Ponsonby), Engebretsen (Wanganui). Taylor (Carlton), Johnson (Ponsonby), Montgomery (Auckland), Love (New South Wales).

The fortunes of the champion rink last year are being closely followed. Wilson’s Linwood rink has carried on successfully since its defeat in the first round by Dick’s Ponsonby’s combination. Two comfortable wins were registered yesterday over Onehunga and Hawera teams, skipped by Grace and A. Smith respectively. Four difficult games await the title-holders, however. Their opponents to-morrow are Duncan (Remuera) and Brackenridge (Lyall Bay), and on Tuesday they will meet Stewart (Matamata) and Harris (St. John’s).

Two further wins by the composite Wellington rinks, which includes the two Crosses, visiting English players, enhanced its prospect of coming through in the section. Victories were secured over such strong opposition as E. Jury (Ponsonby) and Hinchoiiffe (Caledon i-n, Dunedin).

Bull (Hawera) is a clever, resourceful player and, judging by his performance against Wright (Onehungr.) seems fully entitled to the fine reputation he brought with him. Bull’? number three man, Murray,, has proved an ideal support. There was a great finish in the third round game between Barber (Balmoral and Brighting (Hataitai). The visiting team is actually skipped by Naylor, the well-known Wellington champion, and Brighting is number three player. Barber was 10-0, with seven heads gone, but on the 12th head the score read 13-11 in Barber’s favour. One point separated the teams on the final head, but Barber secured two shots, as the result of good laeding by Kelly.
