BRITISH BUDGET

DEFICIT OF £75,000,000 lO.P.A.—By Electric Telegraph—Oopvrurhtl (Received 31st December, 2.15 p.m.) LONDON, 30th December. It is estimated that the British Budget is now £75,000,000 in deficit compared with last year. If the last quarter of 1938-39 does not exceed last year’s, and revenue increases are in accordance with the anticipated returns for the whole year, the Budget would balance, but with the addition of armaments expenditure it is now believed that Sir John Simon will need £200,000,000 new revenue. If half of it is borrowed, thereby doubling the original borrowing programme for 1939-40, there will remain £100,000.000 to be obtained by taxation.
