CALEDONIAN SOCIETY HIGHLAND GATHERING ARRANGEMENTS DISCUSSED [From Our Own Correspondent] An executive meeting of the Motueka Caledonian Society was held in the ; Presbyterian Church hall last evening , to make arrangements in connection | with the Highland Gathering to be held ,! at Motueka on 2nd January. Those j present were Messrs B. V. Warren j (vice-president), E. A. Jackson. J. O. Anderson, J. T. Brough, H. Doig, V. James, A. Douglas, J. J. Sathcrley, D. j W. Ford, A. E. Fry, L. Drummond, and ! Mesdames J. Brough and A. Douglas, j Apologies for absence were tendered on I behalf of Messrs W. York and J. Fraser. I Messrs lan Drummond and T. Lau- ! rie, nominated at the previous meeting, were elected members of the Society, i The meeting went into committee to l give a free discussion on the question ; of a second day gathering, and appointment of judges. On resuming it w’as decided on the motion of Messrs Brough and Ford that the chairman’s action re the selection of judges be endorsed. The chairman explained the difficulties that would have to be faced this year in regard to the billeting of competitors, owing to the lack of hotel accommodation, and asked members to co-operate in providing the necessary accommodation. A letter was received from the Motueka Amateur Athletic Club agreeing to take charge of the sports events on 2nd January. Mesdames Brough and Douglas were asked to solicit trophies for these events. SUB-COMMITTEES The various sub-committees appointed by the convener, Mr V. James, in connection with the gathering were as follows: Grounds Committee: Messrs James (convener), Warren, Doig, Douglas. Anderson. Ford, York. Fry, Sathcrley, Brough. Jackson, and Fraser. Sports Committee: Members of Motueka A.A.C. Billeting Committee: Members of the executive. Ground Stewards: Messrs H. Doig and J. R. Thomson. Official Piper: Mr W. Mclntosh. Blackboard Steward: Mr J. O. AnderRecorder: Mr D. W. Ford. Gate-keepers: Messrs V. James. J. Satherley, A. Douglas, and L. Drummond. Car parking: Mr L. E. Fry. Dance Committee (Institute Hall): Messrs B. V. Warren. E. A. Jackson, J. O. Anderson. A. E. Fry, D. W. Ford, and V. James. The matter of engaging an orchestra for the social and dance on 2nd January was left to the Dance Committee j with power to act (Messrs Fry and ; Brough). | OFFICIAL WELCOME TO VISITORS | . The chairman suggested that in view of the fact that New Years’ Day fell on a Sunday the official welcome to competitors and representatives of other Scottish Societies be extended to them at the social and dance on the Monday evening. This was approved by the meeting and it was decided to invite the Mayor and Mayoress. Mr and Mrs R J. L. York, and Mr C. F. Skinner. M.P., and Mrs Skinner to participate in the welcome. The question of holding a church j parade on New Year’s Day (Sunday) was briefly discussed, but no definite action was taken. The secretary was requested to write the Motueka Ladies’ Pipe Band soliciting their co-operation during the New Year festivities. (Messrs Anderson and James). PROSPECTS BRIGHT FOR GATHER-' ING In dealing with the inward corres- \ pondence the secretary stated that en- j quiries and entries had been received from piping and dancing competitors from many parts of the Dominion including Auckland, Wellington, Has- j tings, Greymouth and Christchurch. The consensus of opinion of the meet- i ing was that prospects for the forth- j coming gathering were very bright and encouraging.
