BATHS TO BE OPENED ON Ist FEBRUARY ARRANGEMENTS DISCUSSED A general meeting of the Motueka Safe Bathing Society was held in Mr O C. Wilkinson’s office last evening. The Mayor. Mr R. J. L. York, who presid ev. stated that at the last meeting of the executive committee. it had been explained that it would be impossible for tbe swimming baths at the beach to be ready for opening on Boxing Day ; and it was agreed that the ceremony take place on the first of February. In outlining the financial position in I connection with the construction of the baths, Mr York stated that the society had approximately £2OO of its own money and that a ./lumber of citizens had kind 1/ consented to become guarantors at the bank for a sum of up to £250. The Government was paying the labour costs o: the work and the Society had to de | fray the cost of materials. He consider- ! ed that it was desirable, in order to ma terially reduce the bank overdraft, that a large and attractive function be organised on the opening day. The swimming bath, he said, contented the whole of the Motueka district and would be a benefit and a convenience to all. He was pleased to see Mr V’ryn Evans among those present, as the baths were intend ei to provide the children with amenities at the Beach. A number of attractions and events were suggested by the chairman for the opening day. He stressed the necessity o’ setting up the various committees al au early date, and stated that he had received- the assurance of the business people of the town of their full support. CONVENORS OF COMMITTEES Convenors of committees were appointed as follows:—Mr D. Thompson, side shows: Mr G. \V. Manifold; transport j Mrs L. Inwood, refreshments; Mi Vryn Evans, children's swimmiug ; Molueka Amateur Athletic Club, athletH •port*; the Mayor (Mr R. J. L York, programme. On the motion of the chairman it was decided that letters be forwarded to the Women’s Division, Motueka Women's Institute, Municipal Band, School Commit tee, Motueka Swimming Club and the Boy Scouts, soliciting their co-operation i.i the conducting of a carnival on let February. A suggestion by Mr Evans that the Nelson Swimming Club he invited to pai ticipate and be asked to bring a team to give a demonstration of life saving was endorsed by the meeting. Among the suggested attractions for the carnival were a wheelbarrow race, from the Post Office to the Beach, a procession, a cycle road race, a beach beauty competition for the ladies and a burlesque competition for the men. a baby show and a treasure hunt. The chairman stated that Mr W. York was prepared to stage a moving picture show for the children, provided a suitable tent could be procured. it was resolved, Mesdatnes G. Janies and L. Inwood, that the Hon. H. T. Aimstrong, Minister of Labour, be invited to officially open the baths on Ist February. 'I he question of a carnival secretary was discussed and an appointment will be made at an early date. The admission charge to the Beach Carnival was fixed at Is for adults. It was decided that a letter of syin pa thy be forwarded the secretary, Mr W. Ovens, who is at present indisposed, Mrs L. Inwood agreed to act as interim sec. retary until Mr Ovens was able to resume duties. Mrs G, E. Smith ofieied to donate a cushion and Mrs L. In wood an iced cake for competition. Mrs G. James donated a 201 b tin of toffees for a lollie scramble for the children. The offers were accepted with the sincere thanks of the Society. Before closing the meeting, the chairman impressed upon members the neces sity of setting up tbe various committees as soon as possible and urged all to cooperate in order to make tbe effort a large and attractive one, as the baths would oe of immense benefit to tbe w hole community, MILKING COMPETITION In the results of the milking comp# tition, m connection with the Motueka Agricultural and Pastoral Show, Mr 111 II Grooby (Umukuri) “Dolly" should read: Lbs milk 67.5, test 3.6, butterfal 2.16, placing 2.
