INJECTIONS FOR CLIFFS

FIGHTING SEA ENCROACHMENTS EXPERIMENTS WITH CEMENT IBy Air Mail—Special Cor respondent* LONDON, sth November. The chalk cliffs of England are to be given a course of “injections” to enable them to withstand the ravages of the ever-encroaching sea. First experiments are to be made on the Kentish coast near Margate. The idea is to give the cliffs a “filling” of cementation, to solidify the crumbling chalk, and so make it both rainproof and sea-water proof. Tons and tons of cement will be pumped into the cliff face, and if successful, the work will bo extended. Cliff falls along the Kent Coast in recent years have caused widespread alarm. Seaside authorities in many areas have had to meet heavy expenditure in clearing away the debris and making the cliff safe against further falls. It is estimated that the sea eats into the cliffs at the rate of about three feet every year.
