THE WAI-ITI SCHOOL
ITo The Editor! Sir,—May T be permitted to write a word or two in answer to a letter signed “Broadminded Mother” that appearel in Saturday’s “Mail.” “Broadminded Mother” says she was surprised to hear of an organised attempt against consolidation of the Wai-iti School. Wai-iti, being such a big place, one can be excused for not knowing everything that is going on. We know there are some tiny tots going to school, hut none of them have a mile to walk. Even in the City of Nelson, some children have two miles to walk, or get there the best way they can, ancl on rough roads at that. As for the majority of parents, we all know that there are twenty-seven permanent parents living in the district, and sixteen of them signed the petition objecting to consolidation. Now, sir, I think “Broadminded Mother’s” majority is something like the “Miserable Tories” in our electorate this last election. As far as I can gather, some of the Education Board’s members are very keen on closing this school and running a bus from one mile this side of the new Foxhill School. I wonder if they ever stop to think, if this is going to do that school any harm. They will, when they have enough pupils left fo- only one teacher. In conclusion, I would like to say the appearance of Waiiti School and its surroundings have never been better than they are to-day, and are a credit to the teacher and children that attend.— 1 am. etc., “ONE OF THE DIE-HARDS.” Wai-iti, 26th November.
