STRONGER DEFENCE PURCHASE OF MUNITIONS MILITARY AIRCRAFT ORDERED WASHINGTON. 18th November. The Netherlands East Indies was the largest importer of American munitions in October. The United States Munitions Control Board authorised nine licenses for the j export of arms to the Dutch posses- ! sions. Military aircraft accounted for £1,024,800 of a £1,045.000 order from the Netherlands East Indies. Authority was given to ship £487 worth of munitions to China. Japan was given six licenses for arms shipments, valued at £41.180. The Dutch East Indies, the nearest of which are only 500 miles north of Australia, cover a total area of 730,000 square miles. Their population is estimated to be 53,000,000 The principal islands are Java, Sumatra and Madura. There is a colonial army of 1293 officers and 37,100 men. On several occasions within the past twelve months the Netherlands East Indies authorities and the Japanese have been in conflict concerning the action of Japanese luggers, which the Dutch suspect of espionage. The Dutch are laying minefields and building new radio stations and naval bases in their more northerly possessions. Dutch defence officials at Batavia welcomed the news that Britain was modernising her Singapore air fleet.
