Before the Dies Committee investigating un-American activities, Harper Knowles, chairman of the American Legion’s Californian research group, alleged that the labour leader Harry Bridges attended a meeting of the thirteenth district bureau of the Communist Party at which a man was ordered to be killed. “The meeting,” he said, “directed one Dave Saunders to dispose of Raoul Cherbourg who was later killed, his body being wrapped in chains and dumped in San Francisco Bay.” Knowles brought 14 specific charges against Bridges, including an allegation of conspiracy to overthrow the Government by force.
