ARMAMENT WORK
SHORTAGE OF SKILLED LABOUR SUB-CONTRACTING METHOD SUGGESTED [British Official Wirelessl (Received 26th October. 11.5 a.m.) RUGBY, 25th October. Sub-contracting as a method of overcoming the shortage of skilled labour for armament work in particular districts was mentioned by Sir Charles Craven, chairman of Vickers, Armstrong, Ltd., at the launching at Bor-row-in-Furness, of the T class submarine Thistle. It is the third of six submarines on order with Vickers, and is the 176th submarine to be launched from the Earrow yard. Sir Charles said that the advantage of sub-contracting in relation to the skilled labour shortage was that it obviated uprooting workers and their families.
