FAIR RENTS ACT

A further extension to the duration of the Fair Rents Act is provided for in the Statutes Amendment Bill, which was introduced by Governor-General’s message in the House of Representatives ..yesterday. The act, which fixes the rents of dwelling-houses in keeping with the rates ruling on Ist May, 1936, and which also imposes other restrictions on the rights of landlords, was originally passed to have one year’s currency, to expire of 30th September, 1937. The measure was extended last year for another 12 months and its scope was widened to cover certain classes of flats.
The clause in the Statutes Amendment Bill provides that the Fair Rents Act will continue in force until 30th September, 1939.
