TURNED BACK BY JAPANESE NOT ALLOWED TO CROSS BRIDGE (United Press Association —by Electric Telegraph Copyrlgbfl (Received 4th May, 9.55 a.m.) SHANGHAI. 3rd May. The British United Press reports that the Japanese turned back a lorry of British troops seeking to cross the Garden Bridge into Hongkew, where a Brutish gunboat had just berthed. The Japanese protested to the British, alleging that the naval authorities were attempting to take munitions to Hongkew without notice. REPRESENTATIONS BY BRITAIN (Received 4th May. 10.50 a.m.) SHANGHAI. 3rd May. The British Army authorities state that the troops involved at Garden Bridge were naval men in khaki uniforms. A Japanese officer attempting to persuade a British non-commissioned officer tjo accompany him to the Japanese headquarters twice seized his arm but retired from the consulate when the non-commissioned officer refused to budge. The British authorities are making representations to the Japanese Army headquarters regarding the incident.

The British naval authorities say that a naval supply lorry while crossing the Garden Bridge was stopped by a Japanese sentry, although it possessed a permit. The Japanese permitted the lorry to pass after an alteration.
