GRAIN AND PRODUCE

CANTERBURY MARKETS I By Telegraph —Press Association! CHRISTCHURCH, Ist April, j Grain and produce markets remain ! almost featureless, though there is fairly steady trade in a number of lines. | The first penny increment has gone j !on to wheal, as from the beginning of this month. Tuscan being worth 4s 7d, i Hunters 5s 9d, and Pearl 5s lid. De- • | liveries have been exceedingly small j I from the country recently, but the increment will probably attract a fair I quantity that was threshed late and held for the extra penny. Oats and chaff are very quiet, and i neither is meeting much inquiry. Prices are steady. I Small seeds continue to move out I steadily, but in general orders are very small, though in the aggregate they j amount to a fair trade. Offerings from j the country have in the meantime practically ceased. Cocksfoot and ryegrass 'appear to be cleaned up, and clovers I have not begun to come in in any | quantity, particularly cowgrass, which i has been very sparsely offered so far. Potatoes are the chief item of interest. but the amount of business passing either between farmers and merchants or between merchants, is negligible. The market is actually extremely slack, and becomes more so in face of the continued uncertainty over the South American position. Reports from overseas are not encouraging, and there appears to be little interest there in New Zealand potatoes. Blight damage is reported in most districts to be small.
