AYLESBURY RAILWAY SMASH

DEPARTMENT BOARD TO HOLD PRELIMINARY INQUIRY (By Telegraph—Press Association! CHRISTCHURCH. 30th March. “Departmental officers who arrived by aeroplane from Wellington made a very close inspection of the derailment, and will act as a departmental inquiry board to hold a preliminary inquiry into the cause of the accident.” said Mr G. H. Mackley, General Manager of Railways, in a statement to-night, when referring to the train smash at Aylesbury. ‘‘Pending the board’s report it would not be proper for me to assign the accident to any particular cause or to apportion blame, although so far as the investigation goes it would appear that the signalling equipment and rolling stock were functioning correctly and the track was in good order at the time."
