ROOSEVELT’S PROPOSAL TURNED DOWN BY ITALY [United Pres, Association—by Elsotrlc Telegraph—Copy right] (Received 30th March, 10 a.m.) ROME, 29th March. Italy turned down President Roosevelt’s refugees proposal owing “to the character of the internal and international policies.” SWEDEN PREPARED TO CO-OPERATE (Received 30th March, 2.0 p.m.) STOCKHOLM, 29th March. Sweden is prepared to co-operate with the United States refugees’ proposel if it meets with the general adherence of other Governments. The State Department at Washington proposed to Britain, France, Belgium, Holland, Scandinavia, Italy, Switzerland, and all Latin-American countries that without augmenting the number of immigrants permitted untfer existing legislation into the various countries, a committee should be created to facilitate the emigration of political refugees from Austria and Germany. The financing of this emergency emigration would be undertaken by private organisations in the respective countries, it is suggested.
