Heavy rains and probably a cloudburst occurred this afternoon and caused washouts in the Westport-Seddon-ville railway and road / Between Waimangaroa and Birchfleld a gap of over 300 feet was made in the railroad embankment, leaving rails and sleepers suspended in the air. Further out. at Kerr's Crossing, a gap of 50 feet was made in the railway, and the approach to a road bridge washed away. Temporary repairs were made to the road and buses at Granity were called into service to make the connection between Granity and Waimangaroa. The 4 10 p m train to Seddonville ran out at far as Waimangaroa and then returned.
