NEW YEAR IN JAPAN
On .the last day of the old year no one in Japan thinks of going to bed. and the bells are kept ringing all night long. On New Year morning all the usual sweeping and cleaning is left undone. lest good luck should be brushed away: and all the entrances are decorated with straw ropes, oranges and lobsters—the last, because of thqir _ ciooked backs, being regarded as a symbol of longevity. From Ist to 3rd January the “three chief days of the New Year, family parties feast ofl “zoni,” a stew of fish, greens and rice which takes the place of our Christmas pudding. The holidays last until 16th January, when they conclude with c J feast of return to labour.
