ANNUAL MEETING OF NELSON “ ASSOCIATION ii hi REINSTATEMENT TO NORBEN CUT GRADE SOUGHT c( ] 11DECREASE IN FINANCE : ! e; | N The following delegates were presentjU j at the annual meeting of the Nelson - | Hockey Association in the Nelson Institute last evening: Mr J. W. Russell, pie- j 1-1 I sident (in the chair), Mrs P. Manlj e j (Rewa), Misses B. Robb (Revva). N. * ! West and F. Anderson (Huia), M. Haase I 0 and Mr H. Bourne-Webb (Wakatu l>' .Women's). Messrs A. Wells (Kia Ora),! 1 ' C. W. Lipscombe (Referees’ Assoc.ation), L. A. Best and W. J. Terrill b (.Federal), V. Allport (Stoke). A. Parker| 1 and I. Boyes (Wakatu). B. Cox and H. j Perrin (Rewa), and C. Chapman (Boys’| 8 •Brigade). ! The chairman criticised having a large 1 list of honorary members. He was • 1 ] pleased to see Mr W. Butler, secretary ] j of the Greymouth Association and form- c 1 erly of Nelson, present at the meeting, j Referring to the loss on the year’s! '! working the chairman said it was not | 1 | always the job of the management ] • r committee to find funds for all and x ; sundry. Nelson had been fortunate in f ( j having tournaments and visits of Indian 1 [I teams which had raised considerable ! ] sums. But these amounts had been c j i eaten into, and they could not always 5 5 j expect to raise large sums by overseas ! teams. He questioned whether the . players paid enough for the game. For > | the seniors it worked out at 5d an after2 1 noon. He suggested that the clubs con- ( - j sider whether the players gave enough -! to make it financial. Hockey did not • &: draw a large public. They must develop! s i a higher standard of game, and give thei 1 i public first-class hockey. For this the; , s players must be fit. It was pleasing to ; 1 note that hockey was introduced last;, ® season into the Girls’ College. In con-: elusion he expressed appreciation of], the work of the Management Commit-:, t lee - ANNUAL REPORT The annual report was adopted as follows: — ; Club Membership and Teams: During the season four men’s clubs and four ladies’ clubs affiliated direct to the association in addition to the Motueka! Sub-Association. The number of teams; competing in each A grade of the asso-j ciation’s competitions was:—Men’s j senior: Four for the championship and' five for the Charity Cup, Motueka entering a team in the latter competition. Men’s Junior: Six. Ladies: Four. Four; lt schools were represented in the school - , e boy competitions. . Championship Competitions: Cham- j

pionship competitions were closely con- £ tested and resulted as follows: Senior. £ Federal: Junior, Stotte; Ladies, Rewa;; Schools, Stoke. j i Charity Cup: At the conclusion of the j < championship games the men’s senior • , and junior Charity Cups were competed ; for, resulting in Federal winning the' senior after a play-off with the Waimai j ; team. Stoke was the successful junior] i team. Cressey and Moller Cups: Rewa, joint! holders of the Cressey Cup with Huia 1 for 1936 season were successful in chal-i lenges against Huia and Kia Ora. thus winning the Cup for 1937 season. In an • interesting competition the Kia Ora! team was successful in winning the] i Moller Cup. The team is to be congra-1 ! tulated on its improved showing as they • occupied only a minor place in Ihe] championship results. Six-a-Side Tournament: On 9th June] the annual men’s senior and junior six- \ a-side tournament was held, the winner] being: Senior. Federal: junior, Stoke, j The ladies’ six-a-side tournament wasj held on Monday morning 2nd August! and the final resulted in Rewa winning! from Huia by 1-0 in the final. The Gregg Cup relay for ladies was run on 2nd August and Huia were successful. The schoolboy’s six-a-side was played on the morning of 7th August and resulted in Stoke winning from Hampden Street A by 1-0 in the final game. Motueka Sub-Association: Owing to lack of players to make enough teams no men’s competition was played in Motueka during the season but one team was entered in the Charity Cup round in Nelson. The absence of a competition is unfortunate as there are a number of promising players in the district a: 1 1 evidenced by their performances in the , Charity Cup round in the Nelson com- ’! petition. Both men’s and women’s teams ’ were represented at the Nelson six-a-side tournaments and two of the : Motueka ladies were included in the ? Nelson team which played so well at the New Zealand tournament at Inver- ; cargill. Representative Games: During the - season three senior representative - games were played, two against Marl- - borough, one a McCarthy Cup challenge, and one McCarthy Cup game against ? Motueka Sub-Association. Marlborough t first sent a representative team to play r Nelson and were beaten by 5-0. On 28th August Nelson played Marlborough at . Blenheim for the McCarthy Cup and 8 were victorious by 2-1. This was the first time Nelson had challenged for the Cup and the team is to be congratulated on their win against the strong Marlborough eleven. On 11th Septembei Motueka challenged for the McCarthy t Cup and were beaten by 3-1. During the season the Nelson junior representatives played Marlborough senior E 11 : at Nelson winning by 5-1, and again a' Blenheim winning by 2-1. At the enc

• of the season, the team, a very young; one, journeyed to Wellington and played 1 a team selected from Wellington Sec- ' ondary Schools on a Saturday, winning I by 6-0. On the following Tuesday the ! team played a much 1 - ;er team ! and were again victorious by 3-1. New Zealand Women’s Tournamenf: ! This season the tournament was played at Invercargill and once again, through the efforts of the ladies in raising funds for travelling, Nelson was represented, j The Nelson team was most successful. -1 ners of the tournament. Eastern. The ’ good showing made by the Nelson team at Invercargill demonstrates that ex- ‘ pcrience gained at the New Zealand ■* tournament at Blenheim, when the team 1 was last in their section, was materially a I beneficial to women's hockey in Nelson. : Pope Challenge Shield: The Marlc ! borough women’s representative team T played Nelson at Nelson and was successful by 5-2. Nelson returned the s ; visit and played for the Pope Challenge h I Shield being beaten by the ho'ders by a j 4-0 in a very interesting game. At the 1 conclusion of the season Motueka sent

i team to Nelson and was defeated by j he Nelson women. Grounds: Town games w.-.re placed at he Botanical Reserve and Pioneer Park vhile country games wo e played at the! dental Hospital ground. Stoke. The atter ground was in excel.’ei t order and j he town grounds, although an improve-, nent on the previous season, were ough and not conducive to good j lockey. Finance: This season the management .ommittee found it impossible to work] ivithin their receipts and consequently , he general fund again shows a decrease. Although the decrease is double ffiat of the 1936 season, much of the expenditure was of a capital nature. Mew nets had to be purchased and owing to lack of seating accommodation , two stands with a seating capacity of 25 each were purchased. Thanks: The management committee recorded thanks and appreciation of the , efforts of the referees, the St. John Ambulance. “The Evening Mail.” donors of subscriptions, coaches and trainers of representative teams, selectors, the ladier.’ social committee and Mr N. L. Field for his generous donation of six-a-sid.* buttons for senior and junior competition. New Zealand Touring Team: Our congratulations go to Mr L. A. Best on his selection to represent New Zealand on the hockey field ol Australia. Mr Bast played in 16 games out of a total of 22 including the only test match played on the tour. Obituary: It is with regret that we have to record the passing of M-.rs.*" V. Biggar and T. A. H. Field, both having been prominent in hockey affairs for many years; also Mrs Merrick, wife of Mr E. S. Merrick, secretary of the Nelson Umpires’ Association. The financial statement, which was adopted, showed a decrease in the subscriptions paid by clubs. ELECTION OF OFFICERS

Mr Hunter moved, according to notice, that the Nelson Association make immediate application to the New Zealand Association for the men's division of the Nelson Association to be reinstated tc the Nordcn Cup Competition grade, j He pointed out Nelson had no chance i of taking the Challenge Shield (for the 1 A grade) from Auckland. i iNuiuen \_up viur o giaue teams;, n inej j Cup was won it would bring outside ■ 1 teams here and stimulate hockey here, j The motion was seconded by Mr Ter- I ! rill and carried without discussion. !
