MURCHISON NEWS

GOLF CLUB OPENING DAY 3rd APRIL (From Our Own Correspondent] Members of the Murchison Golf Club have been very active during recent week-ends in making preparation for • the opening of the season which is to take place on 3rd April. The course is in excellent order, and with every prospect of maintaining the present membership, a very successful season is anticipated. The annual meeting of the club was held recently, and Mr R. I. McGregor presided over a good attendance of members. The committee presented the report | for the 1937 season as follows: The past season has been the most satisfactory since the inception of the club. This was probably due to the fine weather at the week-ends and the j enthusiasm displayed by the committee and most members. Membership: The active membership increased from 64 to 73. This increase is largely due to the fine club spirit which is most marked for such a small club as ours. Course: Through the wet summer last year the usual burn of the fairways could not be undertaken so the club was put to the expense of engaging extra labour to have the course cut with a horse mower, etc. Inter-club Matches: Home and home matches were played with the Redwood’s Valley and Stoke Clubs. These events proved very popular with our members and no doubt will he*p to cement the good fellowship between the members of the clubs. Club Matches: Increased interest was shown by members in all competitions. The winners of the principal events , were: Stewart Championship Cup. D. N. Mowatt: runner-up. R. I. McGregor. Dewars Cup. C. Rait; runner-up. S. Borkin. Borkin Cup. R. Thurlow; run-ner-up. E. Watts. Sykes Handicap Cup, j C. Rait: runner-up, Dr. Logan. Mammoth Cup. ladies’ championship. Miss Mansen; runner-up. Miss Dcllow. Logan Cup. Mrs McGregor: runner-up. Miss Scott. Ladies’ Handicap Cup, Mrs Logan: runner-up. Mrs Milligan. Coaching: During the season we had a visit from the New Zealand Golf Association professional Mr Clements. He had quite a busy time as most members took the opportunity of receiving tuition. Finance: For the financial year our income increased by approximately £22. Practically all the year's income has been expended on upkeep, and improvements to the course. As in past years the income has been barely sufficient to keep the course in order for 73 members without voluntary work by members. Until the subscriptions increase, or members turn out in greater numbers to the working bees, the committee will always find difficulty in making progressive improvements. Ladies' Day: During the season organised competitions for ladies were held during the middle of the week. All transport, competitions, etc., were attended to by the ladies. These midweek games again proved exceptionally popular, and no doubt were responsible i j for the steady increase in the ladies' | membership. The prospects for the approaching season are very satisfactory, as there is every likelihood of maintaining our present membership and with the lm- j provements recently undertaken to the course the links should be in better state than ever before. The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted as follows: Patron. I Mr H. J. Stewart (re-elected!; presi- 1 .dent, Mr R. I. McGregor (re-elected);’ vice-presidents. Messrs D. R. Conway j and J. B. Milligan: club captain. Mr S. Borkin (re-eJected); secretary-treas-urer, Mr W. Borkin (re-elected); general committee, Messrs J. E. Marshall. J. Harper. G. Locke, R. Thurlow, D. R. Cox. W. Rodgers. N. B. Batchelor, also three ladies to be elected at a meeting of the ladies to be held later; grounds supervision committee, Messrs R. Thurlow, S. Borkin. N. B. Batchelor; competition committee. Messrs J. B. Milli- | gan, D. R. Conway; handicap committee, Messrs R. D. Cox. S. Borkin. J. E. Marshall. The annual subscription was fixed the same as for last season. Mr Batchelor was thanked for his generous offer to donate buttons for a mixed foursome competition.

Twelve new members were proposed and accepted.
