TANGANYIKA TO-DAY
SOMETHING OF AN EXPENSE lßy Air Mail—From Our Own Correspondent] LONDON, 16 til December. I was talking the other day to a member of the British Civil Service who returned some time ago from Tanganyika, the African territory that is daily achieving more prominence as the German colonial campaign waxes in intensity. He is very emphatic that Germany is looking for Imperial concessions primarily to satisfy the inferiority complex of a have-not nation, and he ridicules the notion that African possessions, of which Tanganyika is one of the richest, automatically ensure wealth and comparative prosperity for the
country that holds the mandate. Indeed, he was inclined to regard this particular area as something of an expense. Tanganyika has a considerable German population, I was told, ancl all except the richest of the community are ardently in favour of Hitler. The wealthy minority fears that Berlin’s currency stipulations and shortcomings will react against their pockets. Hitler is certainly the man for the havenots.
