HOPE-RANZAU WOMEN’S INSTITUTE
FINAL MELTING OF YEAR VISIT BY FEDERATION PRESIDENT Almost a full attendance joined with (lie president (Mrs W. Smith) in welcoming the Nelson Federation president (Mrs Newman) also Mrs Chaytor and Mrs Wilkes from sister branches, t., the December meeting of the IlopeEan/:au Women’s Institute. Business was put through in recoid time to afford members the: qpportunity of hearing Mrs Newman in her ek-cr popular voice and address. Mrs Newman introduced the subject o£ birth control and criminal abortion as dealt with by Dr Sylvia Chapman and the Hon. Mr Barnard at the Dominion Conference held in Wellington recently. Members were all in sympathy with the problem and will await with interest the result of remits at the next half yearly Federation conference. Mrs H.' K. Johnston on behalf of the members thanked Mrs Newman for her enlightening address and reciprocated her kind wishes for Christmas and New Year. Mrs Smith also, expressed her appreciation and extended good wishes to the visitors and members. Mesdames Lewis and Newman sang a duct and carols were joined in heartily by the members. It. was decided that the Christmas tree given annually to the children of the district was to combine with the garden party given in the Ranzau school grounds. The competition. "an article made from a yard of Britway” was won by Mesdames Thorn and Sutton, equal first with children’s frocks and Mrs Russ was second with a supper cloth. Mesdames Newman and Chaytor kindly acted r judges. Another new member was welcomed to the branch. Afternoon tea, the Ode and National Anthem closed the year’s activities for the branch.
