NELSON CITY COUNCIL FORTNIGHTLY MI LTING LAST NIGHT CORRESPONDENCE AND REPORTS The forinitilitly meeting of the Nelson City Council held last evening was attended by the Mayor (Mr G. L. Page), Councillors E. R, Neale, .J. Glasgow, L C. Pettit, H. G. B. Hurst, S. McArthur. G. P. Russell and .f A. Harley. Councillor .J. Fitz-Geraid was excused from attendance

CORRESPONDENCE The Nelson Institute applied for the payment of an instalment of £IOO of the Council's subsidy. The request was granted. The National Committee of Swimming and Life Saving asked the Council to give assistance to the local branch of the National Committee in connection with the "Learn to Swim Week” to be held from the 6th to 11th December The Nelson Swimming Committee asked for use of the baths for swimming instruction during the week. The letters were referred to the Baths Committee with power to act. Mr A. Cotton, Acclimatisation Society ranger, applied for permission to discharge a firearm within the city boundary for the purpose of shooting sea gulls raiding fish in the Mailai. It was decided that the Council would give favourable consideration to the request. providing the Acclimatisation Society will take all responsibility. The same applicant asked for permission to use explosives within the city boundary. The matter was referred to the Works Committee with power to act. Tiie Advance Nelson Association asked tiie Council to receive a deputation at its meeting on tiie 2nd December with regard to tiie dog nuisance in the city. The request was granted. Mr M. Karsten advised that certain ratepayers were not in favour of tiie proposal to fill in the ditch at Pioneer Park and suggesting that it be cleaned out. Tiie matter was referred to tiie City Engineer for attention. Mr D. E. Vercoe complained that water from Central Motors Garage was running into his garden and under his house in Victoria Avenue. Central Motors Ltd. wrote in regard to the waste water from their garage and suggesting that it be run into the stormwater drain. It was decided that the Engineer inspect the matter with a view to suggesting means of overcoming tiie difficulty. Advance Buildings (Nelson) Ltd. asked for improvements to the footpath in Bridge street. It was decided to reply that tiie matter would be attended to in its turn. Mr G. S. Field drew attention to the condition of tiie water course outside his residence in Coilingwood street. The matter was referred to tiie Engineer for attention The NeLson College Board of Governors asked that the Bronte street frontage of the Girls’ College and tiie front age of Fell House in Trafalgar street be tidied. The matter was referred to the Engineer. Mr C A Satherley drew attention to the condition of the street, footpath and ditches in Motucka street. Tiie Mayor explained that it- was previously thought that the work could be done under tiie No. 5 unemployment scheme, but that scheme had not been put info operation. The matter was referred to the Engineer for attention. Residents of Ngatitnma street and vicinity drew attention to tiie dangerous nature of Ngatitnma street between Hampden and Endeavour streets, and asked that, some improvements be effected. Tiie Works Committee is to report on the matter. Ratepayers of Kawai street asked fur a street light in Kawai street between Alfred and Franklyn streets. The re- i quest will be included on the list lor! inspection by tiie Council.

tar sealing at tamuna beach The Tahuna Sands Association asked the Council to tar seal a portion of the parking place and roadway adjacent to the pavilion at Tahuna beach, and offering to contribute one-third of the estimated cost, and advising that the Automobile Association had agreed to contribute a similar amount. The Mayor considered it an offer which the Council should accede to. The Council’s thanks were due to the T.S.A. and the Automobile Association for their generous offer. On the motion of the Mayor and ( ouncillor Glasgow it was decided that the work be put in hand and that the two organisations interested be thanked for their otfbr. * The Telegraph Engineer asked for the Council's approval of the proposal to erect a public telephone on the north side of Bridge street in front of Martin’s shop. The request was granted. The Commissioner of Transport drew attention to the position which had arisen from the fact that the Council scale of taxi fares did not provide for minimum charges. The letter was referred to the Transport Committee. The trustees of the estate of the late Mr It. B. Jackson asked that the work on the Children’s Playgrounds be completed as soon as possible so that they may be handed over, and advising that the trustees do not consider it desirable that conveniences should be provided at the playgrounds. The letter was received. The Waimea County Council forwarded a copy of a letter addressed by representatives of the neighbouring local bodies to the Minister of Finance on the matter of the proposed Roding River water supply. The letter wu„ received. Messrs Pitt and Moore forwarded their opinion with regard to Selwyn Place, stating that it was a street. The dedication for street purposes of lot 2, part section 141. for Mr Thomas Neale, was accepted. An exemption of portion of King

The Nelson Combined Swimming Clubs were granted permission to hold a carnival at the Baths on Saturday, the 14th December. Mr K. Sclanders asked for attention to tiie footpatli in Tasman street. HOLIDAY CARNIVAL AT BEACH I The Tahuna Sands Association ap- | plied for permission to make a charge ! for admission to the Sands Reserve on I the occasion of the beach carnival to ! be held from 27th December to the 3rd January. Councillor Russell asked if people wishing to go on the beach and not attend tile gala could do so. Mr A. Robinson, who attended the meeting in support of the application, said that the Association wished to maintain the beach, and continue to provide further facilities. It was costing £250 per year to maintain the beach and the T.S.A. felt that the public would be behind the carnival, which would assist the funds of the T.S.A. and tiie Regimental Band. It had been said that there were no holiday attractions at Nelson and this year they would be provided at Tahuna beach. Peopie who did not wish to pay could go on to the beach by a road which would be available south of the main entrance. People occupying the camping site would not be charged. The request of the T.S.A. was then granted COMMUNITY LIGHTING Councillor Russell asked the Electrical Engineer if it would be possible to extend community lighting to light inside the shop windows, as was done at Hastings. Tiie Engineer said it would necessitate larger mains than at present. In addition it would take more lighting inside than outside to be satisfactory. There was another difficulty in control of the lights if inside. It was decided that the Engineer obtain information on the matter from Hastin' 1 ? CITY ENGINEER The City Engineer (Mr J. G. Littlejohn) reported for the fortnight ending 18th November as follows: — Streets and Footways: General repairs and formation work have been carried out in Manuka and Bronte I streets. Drainage: The work of repairing the sewers between Waimea and Kawai i streets as well as in Cambria street, is ; being continued. An exceptionally j large flow of water is now being met j with in the Cambria street trench, i Stormwater: The repairing of the concrete apron of the Nile street East i bridge at the junction of Tasman street | is in hand. i Water: The extension of the Bin low level main in-Van-guard street is being ] continued. I The big dam was down sft 9in below | the spillway, but the rain brought up i the level and it is now overflowing. Ow. | ing to there being no overflow from the ' big dam there was little or no water running into the Queen's Gardens, and ! n was necessary to pump from the I river. Thanks are due to Captain Bennett of the Fire Brigade for his assistance in this matter. Gas: The contractor has resumed work on the. rebuilding of the second retort setting.Power Station: The contractor is now making reasonably good prograss with the addition to the Power Station. ELECTRICAL ENGINEER The Electrical Engineer (Mr E. Fleming) reported for the fortnight ending 18th November as follows: — City applications 3285 (increase 2); / city extensions (1842 (increase 24); total 10.127 (increase 28). Lighting load applied for 2004 k.w. (increase 3 k.w.); heating load applied for 5685 k.w. (increase 16 k.w.); power load applied for 2408 k.w. (increase 4 k.w.); total 10.097 k.w. (increase 23 k.w.): City peak Toad, day 540 k.w., night 750 k.w. The plant at the Power Station is operating satisfactorily. The staff are overhauling and repairing the fittings on No. 2 boiler. Good progress is being made with the laying of the 11.000 volt underground cables. Approximately half a mile is completed to date. Construction work on the 11 k.w. pole >ine in Vanguard street has been stopped for want of further poles. The stall are changing over the 400 volt cables and services. the end of this week we will be withdrawin the o'.d poles in Upper Vanguard street. At 1 o’clock on Sunday morning a motor truck shattered a hardwood pole in front of the Public Hospital, Waimea road. A concrete pole has now been erected and the services re-con-nected.
