Brandishing knives and sharp instruments stolen from the surgical ward, seventy lepers attempted a mass escape from the infectious diseases hospital at Tichilestu, a desolate spot in the mosquito infested marshes of the Danube delta. Terror-stricken nurses and doctors were driven off by the lepers, who attempted to set lire to the hospital. The arrival of detachments of gendarmes in lorries prevented a disaster. They surrounded the leprosarium and after several volleys bad been fired over their beads the lepers threw down their weapons and fell on their knees, begging forgiveness. Several were slightly wounded. The ringleader escaped.
