PHYSICALLY UNFIT MEN

PROBLEM OF FINDING EMPLOYMENT MINISTER OF LABOUR SYMPATHETIC I liv Telegraph I’rese Ansneis tioul CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. One of the big problems at present facing the Government is that of finding suitable avenues of employment for men who are fit only for light work and cannot be sent to farms or to Public Works jobs. This was made clear this morning by the Minister of Labour (the Hon. T. Armstrong) when replying to a deputation from the Christchurch Returned Soldiers’ Association which waited on him with a request that something be done for unfit men among the unemployed.

The Minister said he was not concerned so much with physically fit men. as he believed they were quite capable of being absorbed into industry, but he was concerned with men who were not suitable for heavy labour, however much industry developed. "We are managing to place quite a number in positions, however, and in some cases are arranging special contracts of apprenticeship for periods of two or three years at rates of wages slightly less than the basic wage.”
