FAILURE TO PAY OVERTIME
DUE TO CARELESSNESS In the Magistrate's-Court this morning the Inspector of Awards, Mr W. J, Berryman, proceeded against W. Martin, butcher, of Wakefield, for failing to pay overtime rates to an employee. Mr T. E. Maunsell S.M. was on the bench,
Mr W. V, Fletcher Who represented the defendant, Said that Martin Usually went out oh the cart and on the night in question did not return till 6.30 o’clock. Hjs employee, who lived in the same hoUse, m&ae no mention ot having worked overtime. When tne error was pointed out the overtime was paid. It was purely a matter or carelessness rather than a deliberate offence.
The inspector said he thought the employer was careless in leaving it to the men who were dubious about entering up overtime. The Magistrate said that if it was carelessness he would take a lenient view and award a penalty of £1 against the defendant.
