WATER SUPPLY LOAN

EX-MAYOR’S SUPPORT [To The Editor] Sir, —So much has been said and written on the water supply question that little remains to be said in support of the Roding-United scheme which I hope will be carried at Thursday’s poll. As one who has given some attention to this important matter for many years—always hoping some cheaper method than that now being proposed would overcome our difficulties—l am satisfied that the proposal now being submitted to the ratepayers is sound from every point of view and I earnestly commend the attention of all ratepayers to the excellent contributions of Messrs C. Milner and W. B. Griffin in Monday’s “Mail” on the subject. One correspondent “Overtaxed Rataepayer” asks why the new fire station was erected before there was enough water? The answer is that this was done in anticipation of an improved supply at an early date. In the meantime the pressure is kept up from the pumps in Hanby Park, but that is insufficient to give an adequate supply all over the city for fire fighting purposes. May I suggest to Mr Lew Cotton that the carrying of the poll is not likely to put Nelson offside with the Government whom we are hoping will complete our railway.—l am, etc., V/. J. MOFFATT. Nelson, 4th May.
