TWO ADDITIONAL PLAYING FIELDS

ON SOUTHERN SIDE OF NELSON COLLEGE CONSTRUCTION OF FIRST ONE TO BE PROCEEDED WITH The Nelson College Council of Governors last night approved of a suggestion for the Public Works Department to construct the proposed new football ground on the southern side of the College, further to the eastward than was originally intended, necessitating an excavation in the hillside to the south of Barnicoat House. This is to allow for sufficient room to construct two grounds instead of one, which was the original scheme. The chairman (Mr C. R. Fell) explained that the Government had provided a grant of £I2OO for the ground, though if the work was done by pick and shovel, instead of by machinery, it was estimated that it would cost £6OO above that sum.

Mr H. Atmore said that if the Government could do the work for £I2OO by modern methods, but insisted on the pick and shovel, the liability for the extra expenditure entailed would be on the Government.

The chairman stated that the Department had been given permission to provide for an extra ground, though no provision had been made for extra expenditure, so that the Council had no liability in the matter. The discussion then lapsed. The construction of the first ground will be proceeded with shortly, provision being made for room for another ground fronting Waimea road to be made in the future.
