Richard sampled the first piece of toast Gwen produced. He must have found it very fine indeed to judge from the expression on his face. In fact, he was lauding it up to the sky, as they say. “I must say I’ve never had toast like this,” he said. “Why, you are an absolute master,” All of which was very pleasant hearing to Gwen. Apparently Ted wanted to try some of Gwen’s cookery.
Of course, with so much praise, Gwen could not refuse to make toast for Ted. And Ted’s compliments were so profuse that she felt bound to make more, and go on making more. Both Richard and Ted continued to express surprise at her ability to make the finest toast in the world, until they felt they could not eat any more. By that time poor Gwen was not only hot and tired, but she was just beginning to realise that Richard and Ted had been making fun of her. “What’s funny about it?” she queried.
