ENTERTAINMENTS

CURRENT ATTRACTIONS “TIIU FLYING I)OCTOIl” AT STATE. “EVERY SATURDAY NIGHT,” NEXT CHANGE The many admirers of Charles Farrell who have wailed to see him in his first Australian production were immensely pleased with "The Flying Doctor” which has a story and setting that is almost unique in filmland. Australia's great outback is presented as the locale of a splendid adventure, replete with action, spirited humour and a fine romance. The story uf “Every Saturday Night,” which opens on Wednesday is based on the play, depicts the trials and tribulations found in the modern home. The Evers family, composed of Mr and Mrs Evers, two daughters, three boys and granny, are all up to the times except dad. He has old-fashioned ideas as to how tp bring up his children and his continual lecturing dampens the fun of his big brood. Every Saturday night proved to be a thorn in Dad Evers’ side. Late dates, reckless driving and the high speed activities of his children, kept him in sour humour throughout the week. One particular Saturday night, the Evers home is beset with a series of critical situations and when Dad Evers sees how his children shoulder the responsibilities he begins to realise that in comparison to his neighbours children, his brood is not as bad as he made them out to be. June Lang is the star of this joyous comedy. »

The main feature, "The Gorgeous Hussy,” is a splendidly acted fictional drama headed by a large and talented cast ineluding Joan Crawford. Robert Taylor, Franchot Tone, Lionel Barrymore, Melvyn Douglass and James Stewart. Outstanding among the featurettes are “The March of Time” and a coloured travelogue “Quaint Quebec,” On Wednesday and Thursday comes another attraction from M-G-M in “Sworn Enemy.” The picture reveals the amazing daring of a typical modern criminal leader, a realistic study of the high-handed gentlemen who are attracting so much attention from the G men, with thrills, excitement and gripping drama enacted by a splendid cast which includes Robert Young, Florence Rice, Lewis Stone, Joseph Calleia and Nat Pendleton. “Sworn Enemy” is the type of picture so popular with the majority of present day patrons.

Once in a generation a personality emerges who wins the affection of the entire movie public; of the girls and boys, the young matrons and their spouses, of the older people, too. Such a winsome personality is little Deanna Durbin, the star of “Three Smart Girls” which commences its extended season at a gala premiere on Friday next. With the star are many well known players including Charles Winniger (Captain Andy of “Show Boat”), Binnie Barnes, Alice Brady and Barbara Reed, with an outstanding cast in a picture which has captivate,d critics and public alike. “The Three Smart Girls’ ’is assured of a warm welcome in Nelson.
