Much has been done since Gutenberg inked his type by dabbing it with pads of ink-smeared cloth, but the same principle mechanically elaborated is in operation to-day in the Hoe Octuple Rotary Press, which now prints ‘‘The Mail.” Successive improvements and inventions gradually culminated in the evolution of machines of such power and efficiency that the mere touch of an electric button will result in the production by a plant such as that installed in ‘‘The Mail’s” machine-room, of 48.000 eight page papers, 24,000 sixteen page papers or 1 2,000 thirty-two page papers per hour. The press is 36 feet long, Bft 6in wide and 11 ft 6in high and its weight is over 68 tons. The paper runs in a constant stream from the reels shown in the picture and the completed paper folded and. counted emerges from the centre of the machine. The press is electrically driven and controlled.
