Contrary to his cherished plans and hopes to spend the holiday season in his own electorate in Auckland, the Prime Minister, the ~ ' .a. M. J. Savage, 1 finds it necessary to remain in | Wellington for a few weeks longer, states a Press Association message from Wellington. “It is with keen regret I find it unavoidable to postpone my promised visits to other centres before and even during the midsummer holiday season,’ said Mr Savage. “I must remain in Wellington for some time yet. Early in the New Year, however, I hope to complete my plans to fulfil my promise to make a tour of the Dominion and talk with the people about the better times and the Government’s . determination to keep them better.” The Australian swimming team, which is appearing at a carnival at the Municipal Baths to-morrow evening, will arrive in Nelson from Blenheim at midday. They will be officially welcomed at a luncheon which has been arranged by the Nelson centre, New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association. The Mayor, Mr G. L. Page, will preside and .representatives of kindred sports and local organisations have been invited to be present.
After 40 years’ service in the Post and Telegraph Department, Mr D. Black, chief postmaster at Palmerston North, will retire on superannuation shortly. Mr Black entered the service in 1490 at Riverton, Southland, and has since been stationed at various offices in both islands. He spent three years at the Wakapuaka cable station.
Donald McGavin, son of Sir Donald and Lady McGavin, of Wellington, is affianced to Cynthia, daughter of Mrs Philip Scott of Wylye Head, Kilmington, Wiltshire, states a Press Association message from London.
The appointment of Sir Cyril Ward’ as honorary Consol for Belgium at Christchurch for the Canterbury, Marlborough, Nelson and Westland provincial districts has been recognised by notice in the latest issue of the “Gazette.”
The Nelson Education Board at its monthly meeting appointed Mr B. G. Yates, of the Education Department, Wellington, as accountant, to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Miss Stubbs.
Mr and Mrs C. B. Beatson, Nelson, who are to spend the Christmas vacation with Mrs Beatson’s parents, Mr and Mrs A. R. Sherris, St. Albans, will later visit Timaru to take part in the New Zealand tennis championships.
