“LEAD TO THE WORLD”
LABOUR GOVERNMENT LEGISLATION VIEWS OF CANADIAN POLITICIAN (By Telegraph—Press Association) WELLINGTON, This Day. Keen interest in the intensive period of experimental legislation which has followed the election of the Labour Government in New Zealand was shown by Dr D. M. Sutherland, former Minister, of Defence and Pensions in the Bennett Government in Canada, who is spending six weeks in the Dominion. “New Zealand is giving a lead to the world,” said Mr Sutherland. Canada had undertaken social reforming, including the establishment of a 44 hour week, but it had been defeated ' before it could proceed far with its programme. Probably America would soon introduce sweeping legislation along these lines. Canada took a keen interest in New Zealand dairying, for New Zealand was their rival for the English markets in butter and cheese. New Zealand wool, which was favoured by a better climate than in Canada, was preferred. there to the local product. SOCIAL CREDIT IN ALBERTA Referring to Alberta and Premier Aberhart’s social credit experiment, Dr Sutherland thought it would be impossible to carry out the proposals. The big difficulty was the use of scrip money, which was not legal tender outside the province. The present situation was one of vital interest. Any default in Alberta would be serious The western states of Canada were not in a good financial position and were already receiving substantial backing by the Dominion Government.
