IN AID OF ST. JOSEPH’S ORPHANAGE

GARDEN FETE A committee of energetic workers is at present organising a Garden Fete in aid of St. Joseph’s Orphanage. Nelson residents need no introduction to the work being rendered by the Sisters in the caring for the orphan children. It is hoped therefore, when the Fete is held in the Convent grounds, Manuku street, on Saturday, 31st October, there will be a large attendance. Produce, fancy work, sweets, etc., will be on sale, whilst the various sideshows should prove a special attraction, fuller particulars of which will be advertised later. Several functions will be held during the month to augment the fund. DANCE IN LANSDOWNE HALL On Saturday next a dance will be held in the Lansdowne Hall, Appleby. A special bus to convey town patrons will leave Dee’s corner at 7.30 p.m. Novelty dances will be included on a big programme of oldtime and modern dancing.

COOKING COMPETITION AND PLANT SALE DAY An interesting afternoon’s entertainment is scheduled for Saturday, when a Cooking Competition and Plant Sale day will be held in St. Mary’s Hall, Manuku street, at 2 p.m. Good prizes are being offered for each section of the competition for which entry is free. In conjunction a fancy work section is being included for which a small entrance fee has been fixed. Tomato and all bedding plants will be on sale as well as an excellent assortment of home-made cakes. Those attending will be able to procure afternoon tea at a modest cost. CHARITY CONCERT An excellent programme has been arranged for the charity concert in the State Theatre next Sunday. The artists include Mesdames Du Flou and M. McKeonen (Wellington), and Messrs Huggins and Bishop. St. Mary’s choir will also give some items. The proceeds are in aid of St. Joseph’s orphanage and in view of the excellence of the programme, the organisers hope for a large attendance. Seats may be reserved at Cantwell’s, Bridge street.
